Wine Tasting & Cycling Tour on Korcula

Re-blogged: In case you didn’t see it, kimkim featured our wine tasting & cycling tour in one of their recent articles. Thanks kimkim!

Little known fact, Korcula is known for it’s white wine. Grk wine is a white wine grape variety found in the village of Lumbarda. To take in the Korcula scenery and drink some wine at the same time, join John (who moved to Korcula with his wife Rachael 6 years ago from the UK) on a 4-5 hour tour cycling through Lumbarda. Taste the different wines while getting the local intimate experience which you will not find anywhere else.

The cycling and wine tasting tour will depart from Korcula Town and you’ll cycle through the small town of Sv. Antun passing through the countryside with stunning views along the route overlooking the Korcula Archipelago. You’ll visit two family run wineries all producing Grk wine that have been passed down through the generations, some as old as 200 years old!

Additional details on the cycling and wine tour:

Departing from Korcula Town we cycle to the small suburb on Sv. Antun and visit the small church located up the 102 steps lined by age-old cypress trees.

Heading up and across the main road of Lumbarda we cycle up to the area of Donje Blato where we pass more beautiful vineyards, olive trees and agricultural land. The countryside is also speckled with small old stone houses which traditionally were used as a place to store farm equipment and terraced walls up the hillsides which were used as platforms to grow vines and provided natural irrigation.

We are rewarded with stunning views along the route, overlooking the Korcula Archipelago, the Peljesac Peninsula and the bays of Lumbarda. Just before our first winery stop we look down on the centre of the village (Lumbarda) and can see the well kept graveyard, the blue Adriatic, and small islets poking out of the sea.

We then visit two wineries (either Bire, Popic-Cebalo & Bartul-Cebalo vineyards). They are all family run and the wineries have been passed down through the generations. All the wineries produce Grk wine which is unique to this region because of its sandy soil and Plavac Mali (a red grape grown extensively across South Dalmatia, which acts as a pollinator for the Grk vines which only have female flowering parts). The individual wineries make their own varietal, such as rose wine from Bire, Prosek dessert wine from Popic and cherry liquor from Bartul.

At one of the wineries we also serve traditional snacks: cured Prsut ham, local cheeses (such as dried cheese or goat cheese), olives, and bread. After eating & drinking we get back on the bikes and head down to Przina beach and then up through the Lumbarda vineyards before returning to Korcula Town along the bicycle path.

Now doesn’t that sound like the perfect way to spend a day in Korcula?
