About Korcula Island, Things to do

Top Panoramic & Viewpoints on Korcula Island

You’ll find endless beautiful sights on Korcula Island. Some images swirling in my mind…Stunning bays where the crystal blue sea contrasts against the brilliant white stone beaches and vibrant green fir forests. A medieval old town beautifully carved by some of the best stonemasons of the time. Rolling hills criss-crossed with stone walled terraces, pocketed with olive trees laden with their oil bearing fruit. Hectares of lovingly cared for vines waiting for harvest.

Quite often the best views need to be worked for. That means heading up. But the rewards of a walk or pedal up hill will always be worth it – trust us! So let us share with you some of our top panoramic and viewpoints on Korcula Island. Feel free to add to our list in the comment section below.

Forteca and Novi Put, Korcula Town

Heading either on the road that leads above the town or cutting up the steps Bernardo Bernardi, you will arrive on Novi Put. Here you will find one of the best viewpoints of Korcula Old Town. The recent installation of a park bench means you can relax a little longer to take in all its beauty.

Heading even further up from Novi Put you will come to Forteca, an old fort built during the brief British rule of Korcula in 1813. From the top you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Korcula archipelago.

St Marks’s Cathedral Bell Tower

This isn’t one for acrophobiacs as the staircase up the bell tower is quite narrow, as is the viewing area. However the 20 Kuna entrance fee is well worth it, as is the climb up the stairs. From the top you can see all along the Peljesac Channel and peer down on the red rooftops and inhabitants of Korcula Old Town.

Sveti Antun Church

Around a 20-25 minute walk from Korcula Town, this small church located in the area of Sveti Antun, has always been one of my favourite places. It’s a bit of an effort climbing up the steep staircases to the top (although the elderly residents of the neighbourhood seem to bound up!). The church itself is quite quaint and it’s usually very peaceful here, allowing you to soak in the views of the Korcula archipelago.

Path to Kocje

Follow the road through Brdo (where first you are greeted with lovely views of Zrnovo village to your left) before taking the footpath towards Kocje. Here you’ll be greeted with more lovely views but to your right, overlooking olive trees, across the channel to the Peljesac Peninsula and down upon bays located on the north side of the island.

Lumbarda vineyards

There’s actually so many great spots around Lumbarda to enjoy countryside and vineyard views (join us on one of wine tasting tours to see some more of them). A couple of stand-outs include: the trail heading towards the Defora beaches where you’ll pass Zure winery & Bire winery vineyards, and the higher road above the central vineyard area where you can look down upon the home of Grk wine.

Pupnatska Luka from the road

If you take a road trip across the island, make sure you take the old Napoleon road and pull over above Pupnatska Luka bay. This deep sheltered beach provides a delightful place to swim and is a feast for the eyes above.

Hum in Vela Luka

We haven’t explored too many walking & cycling paths on the west side of the island, but we have been fortunate enough to visit Hum hill & fortress in Vela Luka. Some 376m up, you can walk, cycle or drive to the top. From here you have 360 degree views across a number of Dalmatian Islands including Hvar, Mljet and Lastovo. When the weather is very clear you can even see the coast of Italy.

Across the Channel – Franciscan Monastery & Church of Our Lady of Angels

Take a short boat trip across to Orebic, located on the Peljesac Peninsula and walk up to the Monastery and Our Lady of Angels Church. It’s around 150m up, so a little work out for the calf muscles. Duck under the loggia with your camera for a picture perfect shot of the Peljesac Channel and Korcula Island.

  1. Hi! On Korcula for a couple of days starry tomorrow. Just stumbled across your website. What area of the island would have the best sunsets, in your opinion, to experience? We will have a vehicle.
    Thank-you!
