Yesterday John and I had the pleasure of visiting the Toreta Winery & Musuem. The winery is located in the inland village of Smokvica, where the Croatian white wine “Posip” orginates from. Similar to the Bartulovic winery we visited several weeks ago on the Peljesac, Toreta is a family run winery. For generations they have produced delicious wines with the young Frano Banicevic now at the helm of their operation. His knowledge and passion for producing high quality wines and promoting the Toreta winery was duly recognised in 2010 when he won the award for the Best Youngest Wine Maker.
The well presented wine tasting room is furnished with traditional tools for wine production including grape pressing machines. Frano will happily explain the old and present methods for producing their wine, but of course the best part is the wine tasting! We tried two types of Posip (white wine) – for me the drier was the winner, whereas John was more partial to the sweeter younger wine. We then moved onto the very flavoursome red with a highly fruity aroma, Plavac, which was quite simply, delicious! The tasting ended superbly with the sweet dessert wine, Prosek and a fruity rakija (the Croatian version of grappa)
The Toreta winery is open every day until the end of September/beginning of October. It opens from around 10am until 8pm in June/September and 9pm in July/August. You can turn up any time to taste the wines but they do host large groups throughout the week so you may wish to call in advance to check the best time to visit. Phone number:- 00 385 (0) 20 832 100.
If you would like to visit Toreta, we include a visit to the winery as part of our Korcula Wine Taster Driven Tour, which is a great introduction to the island wines.

I always wanted to see some other parts of Dalmatia apart from the Sibenik area (where my parents are from, my mother is from Primosten, maybe you heard of it). But Korcula is on the cards for next summer 🙂
